2015 Dean Singleton Legacy Grant

We are honored to be this year's recipient of the 2nd Annual Dean Singleton Legacy Grant from The Denver Post Community Foundation in the amount of $50,000.

The Dean Singleton Legacy Grant is named after William Dean Singleton, who built the nation's second-largest newspaper company. Dean retired as chairman of MediaNews Group Inc., owner of The Denver Post, in 2013. He currently serves as non-executive chairman of The Post and sits on the Board of Directors for the Denver Post Community Foundation.

"I couldn't be happier with the selection of Judi's House as the 2015 Legacy Grant recipient," Singleton said. "Brook and Brian's dedication to the children in our community is next to none. They have built such a valuable resource here in Denver and we are grateful that this money will help many children learn to cope with tremendous loss in their lives."

Judi’s House on National Stage for Childhood Grief

In June, Judi’s House/JAG Institute was well represented at the 19th Annual National Alliance for Grieving Children (NAGC) Symposium in Portland, Oregon. Our Executive Director, Dr. Brook Griese, was an invited panelist for a plenary on research that was attended by over 450 participants from around the country. She was also invited to co-lead a workshop on understanding and applying research, and provided interviews for national media efforts focused on raising awareness about childhood bereavement. Dr. Micki Burns, our Director of Programs, led a forum on school based grief services at the symposium, and both psychologists gave a well attended presentation on Judi’s House evaluation findings with Dr. Samantha Farro, Director of Evaluation and Research, co-authored by Dr. Louise Silvern, Principal Investigator at CU Boulder, and Dr. Ayelet Talmi, Director of Institute Development.

You can read more about the evaluation and research programs of Judi’s House/JAG Institute, here.

COO of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg's Post About Grief

Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and author of Lean In, wrote a moving piece about her grief, following the recent death of her husband. Ms. Sandberg wrote "Real empathy is sometimes not insisting that it will be okay but acknowledging that it is not." She describes what we so often see and hear with the families we serve at Judi’s House.

Here is a link to the complete post. We hope her insights can help others who are struggling with loss in their life.

Judi's House Luncheon

The Inaugural Judi’s House Speakers Series Luncheon, “Strength in the Face of Adversity,” featuring NFL legends Archie Manning and Bob Griese, far exceeded all of our expectations. In addition to increasing awareness about childhood bereavement, we raised more than $1 million, and we are grateful for the generous support of our community.

We are appreciative for the incredible response we received, including the 700 guests who attended, the show of support in donations, and the amazing sponsors who helped us pioneer this event. We are especially grateful to our event chairs, Hassan Salem and Mimi Roberson and our Healing Hand Award recipients and honorees Sharon Magness Blake and Ernie Blake. Special thanks to our Title Sponsor, Land Title Guarantee Company, and our Legend Sponsors, Beverage Distributors Co LLC, Greenberg Traurig, and US Bank.

This event was overwhelmingly successful in large part due to the generous matches that we were able to leverage, including a $100,000 gift from the Salah Foundation.

The funds raised at the event will significantly expand our capacity to promote healthy adjustment in grieving children and families in our community and beyond.
Graciously,

Brian and Brook Griese
